Osu is the centre of Accra's nightlife scene. There are dozens of pubs, clubs, restaurants and fast food joints along Oxford Street or on the side roads, from new bars such as Firefly, to The Lexington. Here is Time Out's pick of places to go for a great slice of life in Accra.

Venus Bar, a relative long termer on the Osu scene, is a popular venue for some cocktails before moving on – or for one last late night drink before heading back to bed as the sun rises: it is open until the last person leaves.

Firefly Lounge Bar

  • Critics choice

This marvelous new spot matches bars in New York. The industrial chic style has finally arrived in Ghana with a swagger. Firefly serves premium blends, tasty cocktails and anything for wine aficionados. The crowd is as sexy as the joint, and you’ll find it hard to leave. Good job they serve food.

Barcelo’s Chicken

  • Price band: 2/4

Is there any more steadying food than fried chicken with a huge dose of spicy sauce of an evening? Imagine Nando’s but even more relaxed. Barcelo’s is a bit of an institution and you can get a beer. It is a firm favourite among revellers in the capital for mid evening sustenance.

Heritage Indian Restaurant

  • Rated as: 3/5
  • Price band: 2/4

The Ghanaians are fans of Indian food, and Heritage often gets pointed to as one of the best curry houses in the capital. The atmosphere inside is elegant and quiet, with some fabulously detailed Indian carvings on display. The food is equally pleasing, authentic and spicy. Service is attentive, but relaxed.

Bella Roma

  • Price band: 2/4

Bella Roma is a true party bar. This is a place for dancing and flirting in the outdoor patio area. Memorabilia from the Italian homeland can be seen on the walls, and old black-and-white Italian films flicker on the dancefloor while a roster of DJs keep things moving until the early morning. Authentic antipasti and pizzas can be bought early on.

The Lexington

  • Critics choice

Although not in Osu, it’s a short cab ride to visit some of Accra’s best mixologists. There is a superb selection of bar snacks plus heartier affairs. It’s firmly an international-style venue with the service to match. They are open for breakfast too. Oh, and did we mention we like the cocktails? Go for the Smirnoff Moscow Mule.
