In 1988, Heineken stopped brewing here, but kept the building open for tours: for €2 (less than €1 in today's money), you got an hour-long guided walk through the site, plus as much Heineken as you could neck. It's safe to say that more punters were there for the free beer than the brewing education.
Heineken cottoned on to this, and renovated the building as the Heineken Experience: flashier but less fun. Plus points: the virtual reality ride through a brewery from the perspective of a Heineken bottle is easily the most ludicrous exhibit in Amsterdam, and you still get to enjoy a free beer at the end.
