In a nutshell, this is a brown café with knobs on. It's occupied a lovely site on the river near Amstel station for 110 years, and offers all the joys of an old-fashioned boozer, but has moved with the times. The wine list is longer than most bars', the snacks classy and classic (wasabi sits alongside mustard) and entertainment ranges from big bands to latin to lindyhop. In summer, the huge terrace on the water is illuminated by life-size electric palm trees.
