Founded in 1945 by resistance-fighter undergraduates, the cinema continues to be run by a bunch of students - to great success. Their unbeatable formula is to show quality films, first run as well as contemporary classics, and to host some great festivals, while the CinemaDiscutabel programme of films plus debate guarantees thought-provoking discussions. The Kriterion's sneak previews are always sold out, while the convivial bar facilitates after-film analysis. The concept is so popular that another venue is being set up on Borneostraat in the Indische Buurt, slated to open in 2007.
