Amsterdam hotels
Walking through the city you'll notice that hotels tend to cluster: you’re spoiled for choice in the Museum District or along the canals, yet the Jordaan and the Pijp have few options for a bed and we pretty much list the lot. Don’t fret if you can't find a place to stay in your chosen 'hood: in this dinky city, nothing is far-flung.
Rather less accessible – especially if you’re in a wheelchair – are the rooms. The haphazard buildings that make Amsterdam so charming are an obstacle course for anyone with mobility problems. Lots of the quirkiest hotels are in listed buildings, making lifts a no-no. If you can’t afford to pay top-whack, you may have to grit your teeth and stay at a chain.
Once you’ve checked in, you’ll also notice that you don’t get much for your money. Rooms are rather, ahem, bijoux, and often there’s not much difference in price between a hotel in the centre or in the suburbs.
Breakfast, normally a help-yourself-buffet, is usually included, except at the very top and bottom of the market where it will almost certainly be extra. You will also have to pay a city tax of five per cent, which may or may not be included in the advertised rate.
If there’s just one piece of advice you should heed, it’s to book as far in advance as possible. Also be aware of the weekend, three-night minimum stay policy, which is, alas, both increasingly popular and downright cheeky in a weekend-break destination.
