Still a family concern, the Estherea has expanded since the war from its original modest complement of 12 rooms, until it now lodges guests in 71 bedrooms, spread over six connecting canal houses, just off restaurant-rich area around Spuistraat. It’s luxurious – with a lovely canal-side lounge and a library – but never stuffy, and even the smallest guests are looked after, with high chairs, cots, and even toys and colouring books. There’s a lift, too.
