The art nouveau architecture is glorious. The café, with its vaulted ceilings and enormous windows (each weighing 1,600kg), is spectacular. Rooms are big and full of deluxe facilities (moguls can fill idle moments with the in-room golf-sets) and the sort of touches, like stained-glass windows and granite bathrooms, you’d expect for the price. Yet, somewhere along the way the hotel’s character ebbed away. Now things are looking up: the place was sold in 2004 and Rob Spiekerman, the new manager, is keen to restore its fin-de-siècle glory, bringing back, for example, the original table-top lamps that were rediscovered in an attic. One to watch.
