Commanding wonderful views over the Amstel, the grande dame of Amsterdam hotels has been lodging the great and the good since 1867. There are only 79 rooms and suites – astonishing for a building this size – which indicates how spacious they are, and how many in-house facilities are available. With a Michelin-starred restaurant (La Rive), health club (with pool), and privacy (all rooms are soundproof) it’s the obvious choice for the powerful and pretty (Bill Clinton and Brad Pitt), and there are often screaming gaggles camped out front to prove it. Its reputation was tarnished somewhat in October 2004 when legionella bacteria were found, however things are back to normal now.
