Hotel Savoy
Ferdinand Bolstraat 194, 1072 LW
Just what the Pijp needed: a hotel going some way to bridging the previously gaping price void between the opulent Okura and the basic Bicycle. In a rather forbidding Amsterdam School building, the Savoy is pitched – because of its proximity to RAI – at business travellers, but it’s ideal for holidaying pleasure seekers, too: you could easily spend a weekend eating and boozing your way along Ferdinand Bolstraat alone. Cool, pale minimalism is the key throughout. It’s enlivened by friendly staff: charm them, and you may find you’ve negotiated yourself a discount. Look for online deals, too: some, like the €90pp two-night special, knock the place down a category in price. Whatever else happens, at least you’re guaranteed a safe night’s sleep – the hotel adjoins a huge police station.
