Bobbing alongside Centraal Station, this floating hotel is something of an Amsterdam institution. While it may not qualify as the QE2, all 176 simple rooms are clean and come with en suite facilities and free in-house movies. Redevelopment of the area means the back overlooks building work, while the front looks onto the heads (or feet) of people on their way to Post CS: try and get a room on the top floor. The early-opening, late-closing bar with retro-games and pool table is ideal place for pacifying truculent teenagers.
