Zeedijk 1
Located in one of the oldest wooden houses in town (it dates from 1550, although the ground floor is 19th Century), this is a terrific bar. The name – ‘In the Monkeys’ – comes from when Zeedijk was frequented by sailors: those who couldn’t pay their bills in what was then a lodging house would settle up by handing over a monkey from the Dutch East Indies, sailors being inveterate animal collectors. (Note: apes are no longer legal tender.)
