It was supposed to be a special Valentines treat. BIG MISTAKE.
We called at the restaurant in the afternoon to check it out and also to look at the menu. At first we were put off by the very spartan, all-white decor. However, after speaking to the chef who described a very tempting 5-course set menu, we decided "let's go for it".
Our table was booked for 7pm, but at the suggestion of the staff, we turned up at 6.30pm to give us more time.
When we arrived, there were only a small number of diners present. Our table looked like it hadn't been set. Very minimalist. ie bare.
The waiter gave us the a-la-carte menu. When we told him that we wanted the 5-course set menu as described by the chef, he said "there isn't time". His manner was very brusk. We should have left at this point.
He reluctantly agreed to serve us the 5-course set menu, but after an hour we had still only received one tiny course.
When I went to complain the waiter was again very rude. He later apologised and admitted that there had been a mistake. He thought we had already been served the risotto course.
This had been described on the Time Out website as "Best Risotto. Ever". Rubbish. All of the courses were very small and not very tasty.
The wine (& the meal) were very expensive considering the low standard. The 5-course set menu was 54.50 euros each. Our bottle of Merlot cost 25 euros. The total meal for 2 people cost 134 euros plus a tip (am I mad?)
We had much better meals on the following 2 evenings for half the price. And we weren't insulted by a rude waiter either.
Finally, the couple sitting near us at Segugio had an even worse experience. Half way through their meal, two "hoodies" walked up to their table and "talked"to them for a few minutes, then left. It turned out that they had been in the street below and had seen this harmless couple enjoying their meal. We assumed that they must know each other.
For some reason they thought the couple were photographing them or making fun of them, so they were allowed to march all the way through the restauant upstairs to the first floor and make these threats.
Can you imagine any other restaurant allowing this to happen to their customers?
Beware of Segugio Restaurant. we recommend "Haesje Claes" and "November" both in Spuistraat. Posted on Feb 21 2008 10:26
