Steeped in centuries of history, this hotel began life as a staging post for royals in the Golden Age, and has also been Amsterdam's town hall. Near the epicentre of the Red Light District, guests nevertheless feel like they've been whisked a million miles away from the risqué surroundings the moment they step into the luxurious courtyard. Rooms are spacious and airy thanks to huge windows; bathrooms are art deco-style and embellished with Roger & Gallet smellies, and the suites range from junior to royal. On-site facilities include a spa, pool and an Albert Roux restaurant. No bargain breaks here; there are nevertheless luxury deals like the Dream Package, which includes champagne, dinner and use of the spa. Sunday brunch (€45) in the Council Chamber is an indulgent treat for guests and non-guests alike.
