A hotel oozing an extraordinary history: over the years it's been a Golden Age merchant's mansion, a prime minister's home, a university, and even a hiding place for underground Jews in World War II. Now it's a family-run hotel, and comes with all the usual upmarket trappings: opulent fabrics, grand public rooms, attentive staff. Standard rooms are a bit of a cramp, but deluxe ones come with jacuzzi - and the three separate bridal suites have double bubble baths to boost the atmosphere.
