From the Taittinger poster to the glowing fittings to the midnight-blue leather seats, this place oozes understated class, though it's not in the slightest bit snooty. Half of the large space overlooking the river is given over to a (pricey) restaurant, but it's best used as the perfect spot for a sundowner. Patrons range from moneyed guests popping in from the nearby Amstel Hotel to locals sinking a few after walking the dog. Service is that rare double whammy of cheerfully chatty and highly efficient.

De Hogesluis is no more. It has been replaced by Bar Lempicka, which has expanded the bar concept to include 2-for-1 cocktail nights, live jazz and DJs at weekends. The crowd is now younger and trendier, and as the age of the clientele has gone down so, it seems, has the service. More on what Bar Lempicka has become can be found here: http://ow.ly/2VZpn
