Brits will spot the pun from 50 paces: yep, it's an English fish 'n' chip gaff. Besides fish, there's a selection of pies, pasties, peas and downmarket tabloids. Hearty fare for expats hungry for the national dish.

Not enough expats were hungry enough for fish and chips, unfortunately, as Al's Plaice has closed its doors. If you are on Nieuwendijk and hungry, however, Gebroeders Niemeijer has opened at number 35. This fantastic Dutch/French bakery serves fresh sandwiches, scrumptious pastries and bread to take away.
