In its heyday, the Ritz, as this was called until recently, was peopled by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner and Salvador Dalí, who famously had a horse brought up to his room. It’s looking a little the worse for wear these days, but it remains the grande dame of Barcelona’s hotels; a bastion of old-school luxury, it sparkles with gilded edges and teardrop chandeliers. Other notable features include open fireplaces, as well as mosaic ‘Roman baths’ and four-poster beds. The brand new junior suites are sleek and modern, for those who find this kind of grandeur oppressive. Chef Romain Fornell, the youngest person ever to be awarded a Michelin star, heads up the kitchen.
