Fundació Antoni Tàpies

C/Aragó 255

Antoni Tàpies is Barcelona’s most celebrated living artist. In 1984 he set up the Tàpies Foundation in the former publishing house of Muntaner i Simon, dedicating it to the study and appreciation of contemporary art. He promptly crowned the building with a glorious tangle of aluminium piping and ragged metal netting (Núvol i Cadira, meaning ‘cloud and chair’). This was a typically contentious act by an artist whose work, a selection of which remains on permanent display on the top floor of the gallery, has been causing controversy ever since he burst on to the art scene in the 1960s. ‘Give the organic its rights’, he proclaimed, and thus devoted his time to making the seemingly insignificant significant, using materials such as mud, string, rags and cardboard to build his rarely pretty but always striking works.
