Back in 1911 Puig i Cadafalch designed the creative brickwork of this former mattress factory. It spent most of the last century in a sorry state, acting briefly as a police barracks and then falling into dereliction. Fundació La Caixa, the charitable arm of Catalonia’s largest savings bank, bought it and gave it a huge rebuild. The brick factory was supported while the ground below was excavated to house an entrance plaza by Arata Isozaki (who designed the Palau Sant Jordi on the other side of the hill), a Sol LeWitt mural, a 350-seat auditorium, bookshop and library. In addition to the smaller permanent contemporary art collection, upstairs there are three impressive spaces for temporary exhibitions – often among the most interesting in the city.
Event highlights ‘The Arab World’ (Oct 2006-Feb 2007); French rococo painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard (Nov 2006-Feb 2007).
