The botanic garden was opened in 1999, with the idea of collecting plants from seven global regions that share a western Mediterranean climate. The result is highly impressive. Everything about the futuristic design, from the angular concrete pathways to the raw sheet-steel banking (and including even such small details as the design of the bins), is the complete antithesis of the more naturalistic, Jekyll-inspired gardens of England. It is meticulously kept, with the added advantage of wonderful views across the city.
