Museu Frederic Marès

Plaça Sant Iu 5-6

Founded and once home to obsessive hoarder, kleptomaniac and sculptor Frederic Marès, this is one of the city’s most charming museums. The ground floor contains an array of Romanesque crucifixes, virgins and saints, while the first floor takes sculpture up to the 20th century. The basement contains remains from ecclesiastical buildings dating back to Roman times: on the second floor is the ‘Gentlemen’s Room’, stuffed to the gunwhales with walking sticks, key fobs, smoking equipment, matchboxes and opera glasses, while the charming ‘Ladies’ Room’ contains fans, sewing scissors, nutcrackers and perfume flasks.

Event highlights ‘Sant Pere de Rodes, the abandonment and restoration of the medieval monastery’ (15 Nov 2006-15 Apr 2007).
