Bar Mut

WC/Pau Claris 192. Metro Diagonal.

There’s more than a soupçon of the ème arrondissement in this smart, traditional bar; well-heeled Catalans, BCBG to the core, chatter loudly and dine on excellent, well-sourced tapas – foie, wild sea bass and espardenyes (sea cucumbers). The wine selection is similarly upmarket and displayed so seductively behind glass that you may find yourself drinking and spending rather more than you bargained for.

I agree with Lop, overrated and expensive. I'm a native of Barcelona and can tell you that there are better places. I wouldn't call the food typical Spanish like some of you do, it's a gentrified take on Spanish cuisine ( nothing wrong with that) so a la mode lately, a bit behind London where this formula has been in existence from Thatcher's yuppy times onwards, but hey, this is Spain. Well suited to impressionable tourists that want to feel at home in a "design" place that could be anywhere in any European capital. A tired formula as far as I'm concerned. The service is self-important. Posted on Apr 09 2008 11:50

Very "pijo" but over-rated. Extremely expensive, huge mark up on the wine. Only anxious to please big spending customers as they practically edge you off your table when you are close to finishing. When I went there was a mixed crowd, a few spanish and some tourists, indeed like most places in central Barcelona (nothing wrong with that). Posted on Jan 26 2008 19:24

Have lived in Barcelona for many years and had been keen to try it. A few positives - buzzing, good quality, great decor - keeping many of the previous bars features - but.......much too expensive - very small portions - erratic service and uncomfortably small so very noisy. Have frequented this place every time i've ever visited Barcelona - its great catalan dining with good service.
I always ask for them to reccomended the dishes since the food is seasonal - they do amazing mushroom based dishes when in season.
They do foei gras dishes all around, and various grilled fish dishes.
Have had variations on morcilla, spanish blood sausage, which have been sublime. Its simple but compelling food. There is a great wine menu, which i always find i spend too muich on
I have nothing but good words about this place. Make sure you amke a reservation - u can wait in line when just showing up, but this is a popular place for Barcelona locals and the wait can take some time. Posted on Sep 03 2007 13:20

Hmmm. We had great service, actually. Very cordial. (Not sure about these negative posts - our waitress was very accomodating.) Granted, the room was indeed small. But I suppose that's why you'd call it a gem. Go for the risotto (perhaps the best I've ever had.) The "Hamburger Tartare" was a winner, as well. Posted on Aug 07 2007 11:00

Great food and wine but astronomical prices €22 for a bowl of clams! An otherwise convivial evening was totally ruined by an agressive and rude manager who couldn't wait to get us off our table fast enough for the next sitting. We will not be going back. Posted on Jul 24 2007 09:17

The food here was astounding, every bite was a delight! Buzzing atmosphere, attentive service and a wine selection to die for. Not cheap but worth every penny. Posted on Mar 05 2007 10:04
