Parc de la Ciutadella
Passeig Picasso, Born
Surprisingly extensive, the park contains a host of attractions: the zoo, the natural history and geology museums, a boating lake and an array of imaginative statuary. The giant mammoth, which can be found at the far side of the boating lake, is a huge hit with kids, as is the group of leaping gazelles. Beside the lake is the Cascade, an ornamental fountain on which the young Gaudí worked as assistant to Josep Fontseré, who was the architect of the park. Not to be missed are Fontseré’s Umbracle(literally, ‘shade house’), which was built in the 1880s with a cast-iron structure reminiscent of his Mercat del Born on C/Comerç and then later restored to provide a pocket of tropical forest within the city, and the elegant Hivernacle (‘winter garden’).
