La Vinya del Senyor

Plaça Santa Maria 5, Born

Another classic wine bar, this one with an unmatchable position right in front of the basilica of Santa Maria del Mar. With high-quality tapas and so many excellent wines on its list (the selection changes every two weeks), however, it’s a crime to do as most tourists do and take up those terrace tables just to take in the view.

The service is obviously a talking point and I agree with comments saying people ought to chill out! lovely location although no one mentions how expensive it is and how small the glass of wine, they must get about ten glasses out of every bottle.... Posted on Apr 29 2008 08:11

I also lived in Born to for 3 years and trust me, never got worked up about service. Once you accept that most Catalans don't have or understand a service culture then you expect very little and are sometimes pleasantly surprised. This was my general approach to any Catalan restaurant/bar- even the top ones. So enjoy the view and the wine but don't expect service with a smile......but if you get you will really appreciate it.... Posted on Apr 06 2008 08:59

    When in Rome,....
I've lived in El Born for a year, and La Vinya is among my top hang-outs in the neighbourhood. It is an understatement to say that "customer service" to northern/anglo-saxon standards is not perfect anywhere in any spanish/catalan bar.
But this is completely beside the point. The point is that this is a great bar with a good card and a wonderful atmosphere. Getting all worked up about slow service is only bad for your heart, and will not bring waiters faster to your table, on the contrary. The longer they wait, the longer you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the bar and the santa maria del mar! Posted on Apr 03 2008 11:09

Sadly, I have to agree with comments made regarding the horrible service -- after sitting outside for 10 minutes watching the waiter pass right by twice, I went inside to order from the bar. They asked where I was sitting, I said outside, they said I had to be served by the waiter. Okay....back outside to get passed by once again. I spoke directly to the waiter, nicely asking to place an order when he had the chance. Five minutes later, no service, waiter is inside drying dishes.
NO MORE -- this was our second visit with a similiar experience both times. Posted on Mar 15 2008 15:35

My favorite wine bar in Barcelona, yes the staff need a little warming up, but the mood, the position, the wine, the tapas are all worth it. Have been to Barcelona 5 times and this is the first place I go to for a glass or two to officially start my Barcelona Break. Posted on Dec 21 2007 19:03

I have lived in BCN for 2 years and have been visiting for 10. Sadly, service is generally an after thought. Vinya del Senyor in El Borne is just okay. Any wine bar I've been to in Italy or NYC puts it to shame. In general, don't expect much at all for service. We are so jaded that when we receive an ounce of service we are thrilled. If you can find establishments with Latin American waitstaff, that's usually a good bet- they know service! Posted on Apr 14 2007 18:15

La Vinya del Senyor - has a second establishment in avenida de Sarria, 5 - but we ware!!: Their understanding of customer services, unfortunately, is close to none..
Last night they uncork a bad bottle of wine for us, we told them the wine was not good and from that point onwards things got from bad to worse........ they even refused to serve us any more wine... can you believe this?! imagine you go to a Sainsbury's supermarket and after complaining about an out of date bottle of milk, they band you from shopping at their establishments..... unreal!!
But that was not the end of it..... it happens that we had a wine connoisseur from a very well known international hotel chain in our party whom very politely confirmed the wine was simply not good to them and after receiving some threatening behaviour from their staff, we simply offered to pay the bill, inc the bad wine and leave. but not before filling in a complaints form. Funny enough they did not allow us to pay, so we could not request the official complaints form....
Anyway... I share our story so you can remember it next time you think about going to this place. Posted on Feb 02 2007 12:13
