CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona)
C/Montalegre 5
Spain’s largest cultural centre was opened in 1994 at the huge Casa de la Caritat, built in 1802 on the site of a medieval monastery to serve as the city’s main workhouse. The massive façade and part of the courtyard remain from the original building; the rest was rebuilt in dramatic contrast, all tilting glass and steel. As a centre for contemporary culture, it picks up whatever falls through the cracks elsewhere: urban culture, early 20th-century art and festivals. The CCCB’s exhibitions tend to favour production values over content, but there are occasional gems.
Event highlights ‘Bamako ’05’: photo-graphs from sub-Saharan Africa (3 Oct 2006-28 Jan 2007); ‘World Press Photo, the best of the world’s photojournalists’ (28 Nov-31 Dec 2006).
