La Paloma

C/Tigre 27

La Paloma recently celebrated its 100th birthday, despite the neighbourhood’s efforts to silence it. A walk through the surrealist red velvet-lined foyer reveals a lavishly restored belle époque theatre and dancehall complete with shimmering chandeliers and plush balconies. It’s a strange spectacle for those who arrive early – Grandma and Grandpa in full evening wear still foxtrotting after the ballroom sessions finish and the house and broken beats begin. On Thursday nights the Bongo Lounge DJs mix funk and Latin rhythms with psychedelic lights and live jazz, while Vegas-style go-go dancers compete for attention, while international DJs spin all sorts from electro to acid from 2am Friday to Sunday. The first Wednesday of the month sees the excellent Rawal Launch.

You can say that again, I've lived here for a year now and seen place after place close! I was making a living as a dj here until December, not this year - lack of venues with live music and djs! The worst thing is no one seems to be complaining too much.. It's a tradegy for music in Barcelona.. Posted on Jul 03 2007 00:12

There´s a bizarre puritan backlash going on in Barcelona. Lots of bars and clubs have closed down, and those that are still open have to play their music at ridiculously low levels. Posted on Jul 02 2007 15:28

They are threatening to reopen La Paloma but the last I heard they were aiming for last April! Don't know if that means it's not reopening or whether it's just Spanish effieciency? Posted on Jun 14 2007 16:32

Yep, I confirm it is closed, I went there last week and broke my nose on the door... Too much noise for the neighbourhood :-(
How sad, parties on thursday were just brilliant... Posted on Jun 14 2007 13:54

The Bongo lounge is no longer on a Thursday night there, I went to the final party in September, not sure what has taken it's place. It is surely one of the best looking clubs in the world, sadly due to neighbours complaints the sound levels are really low which affects the enjoyment of the music a bit..
