Sant Pau del Camp
C/Sant Pau 101
The name, St Paul in the Field, reflects a time when this was still countryside. This little Romanesque church goes back 1,000 years; indeed, the date carved on its most prestigious headstone – that of Count Guifré II Borell, son of Wilfred the Hairy and inheritor of all Barcelona and Girona – is AD 912.
The church’s impressive façade includes sculptures of fantastical flora and fauna along with human grotesques. The tiny cloister features extraordinary Visigoth capitals and some triple-lobed arches. Restored after stints serving as a school in 1842, as an army barracks from 1855 to 1890 and as a bomb site during the Civil War, Sant Pau is now a national monument.
