Barcelona's answer to Dubai's Burj Al Arab finally opened its doors in 2009 to a clamour of protest from local residents who feel it disrupts the view of the horizon. No one can deny it's a handsome building, however, and the lobby and terraces are masterpieces of design, as is the restaurant and tapas bar, overseen by masterchef Carles Abellan. Rooms are relatively simply done out, the better to appreciate the incredible views of the sea or city (request your preference when booking).
