A little tacky, but essential for anyone interested in the Wall and the Cold War. This private museum opened not long after the DDR erected the Berlin Wall in 1961 with the purpose of documenting the events that were taking place. The exhibition charts the history of the Wall, and gives details of the ingenious and hair-raising ways people escaped from the DDR - as well as exhibiting some of the actual contraptions that were used, such as a home-made hot-air balloon.

Not into museums but this one is great if you are interested in the cold war and escapes from the East into the West. First visited in 1986 before the borders opened and the wall came down. Revisited in 2008.
