Kaffee Burger - © Britta Jaschinski/Time Out
Best known as home of the popular twice-monthly Russendisko, Kaffee Burger's programme runs the cultural gamut. Early evenings may see readings, film screenings or live music. Later on, DJs play anything from old-school country to Balkan beats or Britpop. The club's decor has been left intact from GDR days, and relatively bright lighting facilitates interaction with strangers... as do the cheap drinks.

There's kitsch and then there's good kitsch--and Kaffee Burger definitely fits into this category. The Russian Disco had the energy of a teenaged clubhouse and the DJ so enjoyed the dancing to his LPs that a few times he forgot to play the next one! The atmosphere felt uber-relaxed, there was a great mix of generations, the drinks were cheap and the crowd was eager to dance, not posture. It really seemed to encapsulate what I expected from Berlin: alternative and great fun.
Great place, went along to see what Russiandisco twas all about and found ourselves in the middle of a huge wedding-type party - with a wide range of ages and dance styles all hamming it up to the crazy swirl of russian folk/ska/punk/heavy metal orchestrated by a sing-a-long dj. There is an underlying swing to the music that just gets you foot tapping along. Cannot be beaten as an antidote to Berlin clubs with guest lists, snotty bouncers, dress codes and 'standards'. The only thing you need to enjoy this club is a sense of rhythm and fun. Do get there before too late as the queues begin to build before 12.
The most fun I have had in a night club in years - great old eastern deco, cheap drinks and you can smoke inside. The best five eruos I have spent in a very very long time.
