Housed in a ramshackle former bike shop beneath the S-Bahn Arches, Golden Gate's popularity is enjoying something of an upswing. Once home to a hit-and-miss music policy, this grimy little club has now settled on a series of all-weekend techno parties. The venue is almost a scaled-down version of Berghain), with a refreshingly intimate atmosphere. People either jam into the small dancefloor room or lounge around the bar or the upstairs toilets. It's an anything-goes location with a chilled-out crowd and nice backyard garden in summer.

We were recommended this club by a tour guide from Aberdeen who'd come to Berlin because there's not much techno happening in the Highlands. We arrived just before midnight, having pooled our funds on our last night in the city, then paid 5 Euros each for entry only to wander in and find the dancefloor utterly deserted. Fearful that we'd wasted our money, we decided to return later and kill and hour or so at the Turkish kebab/pizza joint above the station drinking cheap beers. In come a frisky couple, who go into the one toilet cubicle together while the owner and I exchange raised eyebrows. Some Dutch art students stumble in and ask directions to the Golden Gate. We say we're going there too, and offer to lead them. At least that'll make 4 of us! When we re-enter the club it's nearly 2 and completely packed out. We had a great time, a confusing multi-lingual conversation with a french boy and his female friend about homosexuality, and lots of dancing. The barman instructed: "you can only smoke outside, or on the dancefloor." And although I'd run out of Euros he allowed me a drink anyway. Great, rough round the edges club, friendly staff, and not too techno at all, so don't be put off by that.
