Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

The walls of this classic artist’s bar in Charlottenburg are covered in naïve depictions of hunting scenes and over the years those horsemen have witnessed all sorts of activity. Ex-boxer Franz Diener took the place over in 1954 and with his artist friends turned it into one of the central hubs of West Berlin cultural life. The chattering classes flocked here from the nearby concert-halls and theatres to gossip and glimpse off-duty actors drinking the night away. Still extremely welcoming, you can order hearty Prussian specialties such as Königsberger Klopse (veal meatballs in cream sauce) as you glug down some of Berlin’s quintessential working-man’s pilsener Schultheiss. In a city fascinated with Ostalgie and the rapid rhythms of gentrification, raise a toast (or four) to a former age of West Berlin bohemians.
