Just doors apart, what ties these two establishments together - aside from their shared reception desk - is a wonderfully realised 'modernised colonial' style. In Ackselhaus each apartment has a bedroom, sitting room, bathroom and kitchenette, with old wooden floorboards, white walls, antique furniture and a Mediterranean feel. The blue and white 'Maritime Apartment', with mahogany furniture and seafaring paintings, is particularly beautiful. Most rooms have two beds, and one larger apartment is suitable for four to five people. The pricier Bluehome (at no.24), with its blue façade, and balconies overlooking Belforter Strasse, is home to the Club del Mar restaurant, which offers a breakfast buffet and open fireplace. There's also a delightful balconied garden out back, complete with lawn chairs in the summer. Recommended, but make sure you book well ahead.
