Opened in 1982 in the former goods depot of the Anhalter Bahnhof, the German Museum of Technology is an eclectic, eccentric collection of new and antique industrial artefacts. The rail exhibits have pride of place, with the station sheds providing an ideal setting for locomotives and rolling stock from 1835 to the present. Other exhibitions focus on the industrial revolution; street, rail, water and air traffic; computer technology; and printing technology. Behind the main complex is an open-air section with two functioning windmills and a smithy.

The nautical wing has vessels and displays on inland waterways and international shipping, while another wing covers aviation and space travel. There are models and original designs and electronic information points offering commentaries in English on subjects from the international slave trade to the mechanics of a space station. The Spectrum annex, at Möckernstrasse 26, houses over 200 interactive devices and experiments.
