The oldest structure inside the citadel (and the oldest secular building in Berlin) is the Juliusturm, dating back to about 1160. The bulk of the Zitadelle was designed in 1560-94, in the style of an Italian fort, to dominate the confluence of the Spree and Havel rivers. There are two museums. One tells the story of the citadel; the other is about local history.
