Alte Nationalgalerie review

With its ceiling and wall paintings, fabric wallpapers and marble staircase, the Old National Gallery is a sparkling home to one of the largest collections of 19th-century art and sculpture in Germany. Among the 440 paintings and 80 sculptures, which span the period from Goethe to early Modern, German artists such as Adolph Menzel, Caspar David Friedrich, Max Liebermann and Carl Spitzweg are well represented. There are also some first-rank early Impressionist works from Manet, Monet and Rodin. Although it's worth a visit, don't expect to see the definitive German national collection.
