Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus school, designed the elegant white building that now houses this absorbing design museum. The permanent exhibition presents furniture, ceramics, prints, sculptures, photographs and sketches created in the Bauhaus workshop between 1919 and 1933, when the school was closed down by the Nazis.
There are also first-rate temporary exhibitions, such as a recent show of multidisciplinary work by Max Bill. An interesting gift shop offers 250 items, including design icons such as the Bauhaus lamp by Wilhelm Wagenfeld. Increasing visitor numbers, and a lack of space to exhibit more than a third of the archive's collection, has resulted in plans to expand the museum, but no timeline has yet been decided.
