Berlin's most famous concert hall, home to the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, was designed by Hans Scharoun and opened in 1963. Its reputation for superb acoustics is accurate, but it does depend on where you sit. The Berliner Philharmoniker (www.berliner-philharmoniker.de) was founded in 1882 and has been led by some of the world's finest conductors. Since 2002 it has been under the leadership of Sir Simon Rattle. The Berlin Phil gives about 100 performances in the city during its August to June season.
