The shop front looks more like a deserted department store than a revered confiserie and retains its original 1928 design by Johannes Itten of the Bauhaus. Inside are stacks of dark, bitter chocolate in the original packaging that make little concession to newfangled chocolate types. In the factory behind the shop, the third generation of Hamanns are keeping faithful to the recipe. Erich Hamann bars are sold in most of the newer chocolate shops in the city.
