Built as a theatre in 1890 by the Cambridge Social Union, the slightly ragged Brattle became a movie house in the 1950s, when it offered Humphrey Bogart marathons as a stress reliever for students during exam weeks. In the half century since then, it has kept Bogart in the annual line-up - which includes a Valentine's Day screening of Casablanca. The theatre also celebrates influential directors like David Lynch (who showed up for a special screening of his film Inland Empire), brings back short-lived cult hits and offers repertory series with themes like 'Blondes Have More Fun' and 'Truman Capote on Screen'.
