Once the Beacon Universalists Church, the Coolidge was transformed into an art deco movie palace in 1933, but fell into disrepair. After putting up with the cinema's shabby seats and dim lighting for years, Coolidge fans have been rewarded with new seats and beautifully restored fixtures, after major renovations were completed in 2006. Local filmmakers get exposure in the new screening room upstairs, while the best indie films grace the balcony and ground-floor theatres. Children's matinées and special shows add to the appeal.
