BA's zoo is one of those interesting but somewhat discomfiting attractions many animal lovers will prefer to shun, although serious zoological and conservation work does go on here. Of more general interest are the buildings, constructed between 1888 and 1904, which ape the architecture of the animals' native countries, resulting in a landscape of scaled-down monumental follies that make the zoo look rather like 'Animal Town'. Of the beasts themselves, the polar bears are glum but stoic, the monkeys are loud and disquietingly horny, and a baby giraffe is the latest 'guest' to wow the crowds.
