The clue is in the word 'palace' - not, in this case, pretentious hyperbole. For the Alvear is more than a mere hotel. It's also a source of civic pride, a symbol of grandeur and an enduring reminder of BA's golden, affluent era. Filling half a block of the lavish Avenida Alvear (recently voted one of the five most exclusive shopping areas in the world), it shares a pavement with the likes of Armani, Ralph Lauren and Cartier. The 210 rooms - 100 of which are suites and among the largest in the city - are an ocean of opulence: rich burgundies, antique French furniture and Hermès bathroom goodies scattered around the jacuzzis. Such resplendence is not withheld completely from the hoi polloi, however; the bar and restaurants are open to the public. The jewel in the crown is La Bourgogne, overseen by French chef Jean-Paul Bondoux. The L'Orangerie bar and terrace is the most exclusive brunch and buffet venue in the city and the best way for non-guests to soak up the hotel's ambience.
