El Zanjón de Granados review

Part archaeological museum, part event space, El Zanjón is a beautifully restored residenceencapsulating three centuries of urban living. Although the façade dates from 1830, traces from an earlier patrician home - an open-air cistern, a lookout tower and a 1740 seashell-mortared wall - have been excavated by amateur historian Jorge Eckstein, who started dredging the 166m (545ft) of tunnels beneath his property in 1985. Eckstein has unearthed a treasure trove of workaday but eclectic objects from the colonial era, including French tiles, African pipes, English china, and so on. An underground hit.
