Malba: Colección Costantini review

With almost 200,000 visitors in 2007 and consistent rave reviews in both the local and foreign media, Malba would be many people's pick for best museum in the city. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Tarsila do Amaral and other illustrious painters share the walls with wonderful Argentinian modern masters such as Antonio Berni and Jorge de la Vega, who are well respected but not well known internationally.

There is also an excellent café and terrace restaurant, plus a small cinema specialising in cult and arthouse retrospectives. The building itself is smaller than Costantini originally wanted, and can house only 40 per cent of his collection. To solve this he has funded a three-year expansion project which will add several new exhibition areas in an underground space beneath Plaza República de Perú.
