Cafe San Juan is no longer the bargain it was when it first opened, but reservations are still more or less essential here. During the daily lunch rush, chef Leandro Cristobal fashions inventive tapas and pastas from the likes of sun-dried tomatoes, brie and seasonal vegetables, while his mother pours the wine. The daily menu is scrawled on chalkboards that are hauled around from table to table, resplendent with homely dishes like courgette-rich fettuccine. One of our favorites: make sure you make time for a visit while you're in the city.

My wife and I have been living in the Recoleta in central Buenos Aries for the past 6 weeks, and have made it our business to try as many highly rated restaurants as possible. We think that the San Juan Cafe ranks at the very top, and is a must lunch spot for anyone going to the San Telmo market on the weekends. Just incredible food and a warm environment- one of the highlights of our trip!!!!!
Main courses are now priced at 60 to 80 pesos each. As of August 2010. Delicious but costly.
