The Monumental - home to Club Atlético River Plate, eternal rivals of Boca Juniors - was the setting for the opening and the final of the 1978 World Cup. It's the largest stadium in the country and, thanks to its location in the swish, upper-class barrio of Núñez, probably the safest. Spend that extra few pesos on a ticket for the platea and avoid the popular, unless knife fighting and sweaty hooligans are your thing. It's also the only all-seater stadium in Buenos Aires that comes close to meeting FIFA standards. Big-name international musicians like U2 and Keane have also played at the Monumental to crowds of 60,000 and upwards.
