Groote Kerk

Originally a Cape Dutch building, the church underwent so much work over the years that the only remnants of the original are the old tower and the ornate pulpit carved by sculptor Anton Anreith. The construction of this, the country's first Dutch Reformed Church and the oldest in South Africa, commenced in 1678; it was finally consecrated in 1704. Interesting highlights include the country's largest organ and the biggest unsupported domed ceiling in the southern hemisphere.
