On June 21, 2006, Matt DiMarco, a local improv comedian, set out to write about every song in his music library in alphabetical order. He’s logged more than 100 sessions where he writes about what he was doing when he was listening to the music (“taking a walk”), and delves into incredible detail on each tune. While analyzing “Get Back” by the Beatles, he admits he always thought the first line was, “Jojo was a man who thought he was a woman” (wait, that’s what we thought it was, too). Later he says, “I still don’t know what this song is about, except that it is not about trannies.”
Chicago Salad Daze

Let’s face it: There just aren’t that many interesting and relatively cheap lunch spots in the Loop/River North area. You’ve had one chopped salad, you’ve had them all, right? Maybe not, which is why local comics Margaret Hicks (who’s also a Chicagoist writer) and John Eiberger have set out to find the best salad within walking distance of their office. What’s their range? The Merchandise Mart. Sounds limited, but given the place has 4 million square feet, there’s no shortage of options for greens. Hicks and Eiberger pick a place at random, then go head-to-head on the salad du jour. Potbelly was the champ after nearly 60 bowls of roughage, but then Foodstuffs opened in December with even more greens. Oh, snap (peas)!
Illinois Pancakes

We all love pancakes—they’re fried cakes after all—but these two guys are obsessed. They’ve spent a year visiting the Land of Lincoln’s many pancake houses and have recorded their findings in detail on this blog. Orders are described; pictures are taken; debate ensues. In a recent post, writer Joe orders strawberry pancakes…big mistake. “Not bad, but strawberries and pancakes is not the best combination. Strawberries are great with waffles or blintzes, but pancakes, I have found, are best in their purest and simplest form, their warm fluffy goodness graced only with melted butter and maple syrup.” Okay, we get it—you like pancakes.
