Fine Specimen
The luthiers over at Chicago-based Specimen have designed yet another gorgeous guitar just in time for the holidays. The Jacobite combines elements of the Fender Telecaster with a 16th-century parlor guitar. Our favorite part is the fretboard and its mother-of-pearl inlay, which displays a rustic Alaskan landscape. Available at Specimen, 1240 N Homan Ave between Division and Potomac Sts (773-489-4830); price on request.
All mixed up
Remember the days when you gave your high-school crush a mix-tape as a token of love? Step it up a notch with this cassette necklace, produced by Elodie in Paris and made of cast sterling silver. (Gifting it with an iPod full of your favorite tunes might be a nice touch, too.) Available at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E Chicago Ave at Mies van der Rohe Way (312-280-2660); $123.
How he seas Chicago
The members of the Sea and Cake have always been interested in visual art as much as music. Sam Prekop lets the work in his new book, simply titled Photographs (Presspop), speak for itself, offering dramatic black-and-white shots of Chicago as well as more abstract compositions. There’s something for music fans, too: a CD of instrumental songs inspired by the book’s contents. Available at thrilljockey.com; $22.
White hot flashes
Digital is a dirty word to the White Stripes, who are known for their love of analog recording equipment. Naturally, the new cameras they designed go the old-school analog route, too (yes, that means buying film). The “Meg” camera is based on a classic 1960s model, while the “Jack” camera dates back to the ’80s. You’ll look light years cooler snapping your favorite bands than your friends with those puny cell-phone cams. Available at whitestripes.com/lomography/lomography.html; $180 each.
